NETWORK OF LABORATORIES OF FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR REACTIONS, MEMBRANE PROCESSES AND FUEL CELLS (FUNMAT)
This Network of Laboratories, financed by the Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (project REEQ/764/EQU/2005 from the National Programme for the Scientific Re-equipment), is coordinated by Institute of Materials and Surfaces Science and Engineering (ICEMS) and involves research teams of ICEMS, of the Laboratory for Process, Environmental and Energy Engineering (LEPAE), of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) and of the Research Unit of Textile and Paper Materials from Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI). The main objective is to develop a network on Polymers and Membranes, Membrane Separations/Reactions, Fluid Mechanics/Transport Phenomena, Medical Micro Devices / Membrane Blood Oxygenators and Fuel Cells using advanced characterization techniques in Polymers, Membranes, Fluid/Membrane Interfaces, Separation/Reaction Systems and Fuel Cells.

ELECTROKINETIC ANALYSER
This
equipment determines the zeta potential of membrane surfaces or
powders through the measurement of the streaming potential induces
by a given flow rate of electrolyte that passes tangentially to the
membrane surface or across a bead of powder.

HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETER
This equipment enables the
determination of concentration profiles in two-dimensional flows in
slits with mass-transfer at the channel walls. It is also adequate
for the determination of diffusion coefficients of liquid binary
mixtures through the record of the unsteady-state concentration
profiles in diffusion cells.
Main Characteristics
This equipment consists on an assembly of different components. The main components are an optic table ( ST-Series from NEWPORT), a 35 mW He-Ne Laser (model 31925 from Research Electro-Optics, Boulder, Colorado, USA), optic components and a CCD camera connected to a PC computer.

Gas Chromatograph
This
Gas Chromatograph is adequate for the analysis of disinfection
by-products and pesticides in water for human consumption. The
equipment has automatic injection (split/ splitness), sample
pre-concentration and two detectors (Electron Capture Detector (ECD)
and Photoionisation Detector (PID)).

UV/VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETER
This spectrophotometer measures
the absorvance in the range between 190 a 1100 nm.

Model UV-VIS 1700 from SHIMADZU (Japan) . Range 190 a 1100 nm, 1 nm bandpass, double beam design, Software UVprobe.

FUEL CELL TESTING FACILITY
This fuel cell testing facility enables the monitoring of fuel cells. This equipment was specifically designed to ensure the control and optimization of the key-parameters relative to the characterization of ion-exchange membranes and electrode/membrane interfaces.

INFRARED SPECTROPHOTOMETER WITH FOURIER TRANSFORM (FT-IR)
Infrared spectrophotometer with Fourier transform (FT-IR). Spectral range from 500 to 1200 cm-1. Max resolution: 0.7 cm-1. Band repeatability: 0.002 cm-1. Ensuring universal transfer of calibrations: the toluene spectrum (used as standard) between 4100 and 6100 cm-1, in transmittance, with an optical cell of 0.5 nm at 28 ºC.

PERVAPORATION TESTING FACILITY
Pervaporation system for obtaining the methanol/ethanol permeability across proton exchange membranes used for direct fuel cells. This system is integrated into a fuel cell bench.
